4 Ways to Take Action for Consent Awareness Week (Sept. 16 – 20)
Consent Awareness Week is an educational initiative held at universities across the country. The week is an opportunity for campus communities to create a dialogue about consent, pleasure, relationships and increase understanding of sexual violence. It’s also an opportunity to raise awareness of on- and off-campus services.
This year we are again taking the lead of student advocates and members of the Ontario University Sexual Violence Network by marking this week in September in order to align with the increased risk of sexual violence and harassment that accompanies the start of the new academic year. Follow along and share what you’re up to by using #WeBelieveYou and #ConsentAwarenessWeek.
How will you mark Consent Awareness Week? Here are four ideas to get you started.
Learn: The Queer and Trans Sex Ed You Should Have Gotten in High School with Eva Bloom
Queer & trans students deserve a sex-ed space that centres queer & trans wellbeing and pleasure! Join us for this shame-free, fun, and interactive workshop, where we’ll learn communication frameworks, queer & trans inclusive pleasure anatomy, sex & dating beyond cisheteronormative scripts, and bust myths about sexual health.
This is a virtual Queer Orientation workshop, hosted collaboratively with the Sexual Education Centre at U of T.
Act: Queer Self-Defense at UTSC
Empower yourself and your community with the skills and confidence to resist violence and discrimination through this inclusive and empowering workshop, “Acts of Resistance: Self-Defense for 2S & LGBTQIA+ Individuals and Community.” This workshop is designed specifically for members of the Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ communities, providing a safe and supportive space to learn practical self-defense techniques while fostering solidarity and resilience.
Heal: Tri-Campus Crafternoon Tea
Crafternoon Tea is an opportunity to disconnect in a safe, welcoming environment with snacks, tea or coffee, and (of course) crafts! These sessions are open to students, staff, and faculty at U of T. We host Crafternoon Tea on all three campuses.
Join this monthly drop-in program where we’ll explore our creativity, build community, and expand our understanding of grounding strategies through art and tactile activities.
Join: What Will We Create Together?
The Sexual Violence Prevention & Support Centre (SVPS Centre) supports students, staff, faculty, and librarians who have been affected by sexual violence or sexual harassment. With survivors, allies, and a network of anti-violence advocates, we co-create safer paths toward healing, preventative campus practices, and a more just world.
