Building a Culture of Consent at the University of Toronto (Student Module)

Building a Culture of Consent at the University of Toronto is an online module that teaches students about consent, and how to incorporate it into building boundaries, communication, and healthy relationships. It also includes key information on sexual violence, the landscape in which sexual violence occurs, and support services for survivors.

About this module

This module can be directly assigned to students, shared as a supplemental learning resource, or used as a pre-requisite for additional synchronous training with the SVPS Centre.

Learning Objectives

  • Examining the landscape of gender-based violence and sexual violence using an intersectional framework and the role of power, privilege, and oppression.
  • Exploring what practicing consent and effective communication to form healthy relationships can look, sound, and feel like in practice.
  • Engaging with practical, applied examples of consent to build their Culture of Consent skillset.
  • Learning about U of T’s Policy on Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment and its relevance to their daily lives at the University.
  • Learning about the support services offered at the tri-campus Sexual Violence Prevention and Support Centre.

If the link does not work or the option to “Enroll in Course” is not available, after you log into Quercus, copy the direct website address, listed above, into a different browser and follow steps 2 to 5.

If the module displays the ‘loading’ icon for several minutes and the screen does not change, please try the following:

3. Confirm you are enrolling in the correct course, and select the “Enroll in Course” button.

4. Select the “Go to the Course” button to access the SVEP training course.

5. Begin the training by clicking on the “Start the Module” link.

Note: If you wish to return to the training later, you can always access the course by logging into Quercus and selecting the Sexual Violence Prevention and Education course card on your Dashboard. 

Self-Care Resources

Learning about sexual violence can be difficult. We understand that some learners may also be survivors of sexual violence or harassment, so this online module content could be especially challenging or activating to engage with. You are not aloneand your wellbeing is so important. Below are some tips that may be helpful to consider as you move through Building a Culture of Consent at the University of Toronto.

  • If you can, complete the online module in an environment where you feel comfortable and safe.
  • Be mindful and gentle with yourself.
  • Schedule regular pauses when you’re completing the module to look after yourself emotionally and physically.
